I buy my copy of this tax program from COSTCO every year. I tried several times to buy it direct from Intuit and by subscription, but they messed up the order every year. Besides, it's discounted from COSTCO and usually available in November. I have used 3 different commercial tax programs and this one is the best - hands down. I use the small business version, which included complex filings like K-1's (tax sheltered investments), amortization of my home office, multiple family returns, and detailed business expense itemization, with room for notes and carry over from year to year. Other programs are OK for the basic return, but I really noticed the difference when it got down to details in the more obscure schedules, many of which make no sense at all from inspection. You need a program like this to explain what the form is for, how it is intended to be used, and advice about how most people file. There is some audit prediction and future planning advice, as well. The biggest draw back is that Intuit is not a friendly company when it comes to customer support (India), comments and feedback, or reporting a bug. (the bugs I found are in awkward areas such as figuring out if something is a depreciation expense or not in the K-1 sections - my company reports rarely share that information and TurboTax still has room for improvement here).

Newest improvements are in the investment sections, where you report stock and securities profits (or losses).

Sill on my gripe list are the in ability to print some section of sub-total summary reports and no way to alphabetically sort out long lists of things like 1099's. I often end-up with duplicated 1099's and they haven't made it any easier to spot them.

I, like others, have used TT Deluxe for the past oh... twenty-years! And now it appears TT Deluxe has stopped putting even the barest support for the infamous Schedule C in the product. I contacted them in advance and was told in effect, too bad.

So here I am, I have ordered the Personal and Small Business version at the higher cost. I was too fearful to change, as I do several peoples taxes each year (three kids and a girlfriend), so this import function needed to work perfectly, which it apparently has. I have completed three returns so far, and the appropriate forms and guidance seem to be present and work well.

If you're worried about transferring old tax info (Import function), then don't worry - it works. I am a classic American, employed, but also with two small businesses on the side where I dutifully pay my taxes. In short, TT Personal & Small Business worked well.

I only have one small complaint. The additional cost for add-on state returns. $39.95 EACH! Wow. Well, I got over that as I do every year, but then I run into the "Oh, you want to file this state electronically, eh?" "Well, that's $19.95!" Yup, if you have a (for example) Daughter out of state, it will cost you an extra sixty-bucks to complete her taxes, and file them electronically. My total outlay this tax year is $140.

Well, I gave it five stars, as that is specifically what I am reviewing. Other TT products may not be the value they appear to be, however.

Being frustrated and disappointed with their product, I took Intuit up on their 60 day unconditional money back guaranty. After sending the CD back to Intuit/TurboTax for a refund under their 60 day unconditional money-back guaranty, I received a letter from their Returns Department refusing my refund. The explanation? A terse single sentence stating that it was returned outside of their 60 day window. No proof or even indication of when they received it, just a flat out refusal. Also, no return of the CD which I now apparently own but they kept.

The curious thing is their user agreement explanation of the "60 day unconditional money back guaranty" is painfully vague. The user agreement states that the unconditional money back guarantee requires that purchasers dissatisfied with their product "return the Software with a dated receipt or packing slip within 60 days of shipment." (https://turbotax.intuit.com/corp/desktoplicense.jsp) Nowhere does it say that Intuit must RECEIVE it within 60 days, just that we must RETURN it to them within 60 days.I returned the CD via tracking USPS to one of their many different return addresses (depending on where one looks) with 5 days to spare and a guaranteed delivery date with 2 days to spare. Both my sending it back to them, and the guaranteed tracking delivery date fall within the 60days. Indeed, as many online consumers know, the postal date stamp on the returned package should have been sufficient. Most honest corporations do this exactly -- honor the date it was SENT for return.

Alas, writing to Inuit's "WeCare" consumer email center for clarification of their policy and the basis for their rejection of a refund under the terms of their own policy, has resulted in no response. Apparently, they don't care.

My original review took issue with their product, with its lack of transparency and the absence of accounting flexibility. Now I take issue with their honesty and integrity. If I could give them no stars I would.

At least they could have returned to me the CD which they insist I own... I could then string it up in the garden to chase the mocking birds from the tomatoes, or offer it to my neighbor's dog as a mock Frisbee...

      Original Review:
I suppose this is worthwhile for people who don't normally keep track of their taxes or have an established mode of calculating costs/depreciation/deductions, etc. But, for me, switching to this software was onerous and frustrating, and ultimately, I decided not to file using it. There is no real variability in important matters like how depreciation is calculated, for example. While federal tax law allow various modes of calculating depreciation, you do have to keep consistent year to year. This software didn't allow me to continue to use the depreciation method I had been using for the last several years. It calculates it in one way only. To switch, I'd put myself at risk for an audit or worse by switching methods in mid-stream, not least having to redo my own records. The software is also painfully non-transparent. For example, it shows the accumulated deductions for rental property as one amount, but then on the 1040 that deduction is significantly less, with no explanation. The only explanation that could possibly account for the difference is if the income cap were reached, which it hadn't. And the software doesn't let you manually change the amount it enters in the 1040. The final straw was when I went to work on my state taxes, which apparently for CA requires manually working with the tax forms. For California? Really? The benefits I sought, clear and simply completion of the many tax forms and free e-filing, were gone. With that, I decided I might was well continue to do it on my own and just pay the e-filing fee. At least I'll know what is what and why.
