This maker is the best non-electronic toy on the market! Although it kinda is as you need to plug it in and it talks to you, guiding you thru the steps. Reminds me of the old Mattel Strange Change Machine, Incredible Edibles or Creepy Crawlers. They tried to remake these great toys of the past with lamo politically correct versions that had whimpy light bulbs and non-toxic material and just ruined them. But this one hits the mark! There is a real heating element in these insulated by the case so you feel no real heat. (AKA- no chance to get burnt) The wax sticks are not really wax as I was dreading but some kind of low heat soluble polymer. Yet no real smell when cooking them up. When the do come out you really have to stick your nose up to the cars to smell them - and they smell good ! I mean these things look like something you would buy in a store, not make at home! Really professional! The first car came out a solid color but addition cars have a tie dye look at the very end, so if you do it right you can pick a complimentary color for next in line. As far as breaking and sticking I had none of those problems, but I did supervise as my daughter jammed a stick in the wrong way and trying to force the molds in the wrong way. As long as you take your time and do it correctly it works perfectly! We spent some time figuring out why the door wouldn't close. It says "close door" and "push strait button". But it doesn't tell u you need to hold the door closed while you push the start button to lock it. After that we just went to town. Really cool and fun! I had to kind of bring it out and say let's try this to get my daughter interested as she hasn't opened it from Christmas. But once she saw it working she couldn't get enough. Now I guess I'm on the hook for refills and additional molds. Lol. But I love I it as much as my 10 year old.

Didn't know whether this would be a cheap promotional toy that didn't do so well in application - but this is not only quality and sturdy, but the kids are addicted to using it. They've set up "shop" and take "orders" to make new body types. The colors kind of blend together (from one stick to the next) so if you are adamant about having purely one color, you'll need to put two sticks back to back that are the same color. The results are incredible - they are quality pieces of plastic that the kids actually got to make themselves. The plastic is strong and durable - absolutely NOT what I would expect from something that lets a child make it. My 4yo & 8yo both love & use this - though it does require parental supervision. My 8yo is able to do it on his own now after having watched me do it with him a few times, and I'm absolutely confident in his use of it. My 4yo probably could do it by himself (as far as the directions go, he gets it & could replicate it) but I just don't allow him to given the electricity and heat it produces (internally - you don't touch anything hot....IF you follow the directions!)

I bought this as a Christmas present after he viewed a kid on YouTube using this product. It was a fantastic reaction when he opened the gift - but I have to say the actual use is... OK. I mean it's neat that he can make his own cars, but there are a couple of things that made it lose it's wonder pretty quickly for my son. For one is the length of time it takes to melt the wax. No kid s going to sit around for the 10 minutes to melt and 6 minutes to cool - but the product is constantly, noisily making sounds and beeping and repeating phrases over and over in some weird attempt to keep the kid engaged. Let it go - and let the child play while it does it's non-action filled thing.

Also, the tool to "trim" the wax is very dull- for safety sure. But it's rather ineffective in its purpose. The poker part, to push the wax out of the mold, is also fairly ineffective.

I do still give it a four star review though- there are ways around those minor issues, and accepting that it's going to be annoyingly noisy (even to my son) while spending large swathes of time doing nothing visually interesting - it's still cool to have these mixed color cars he made himself.

My son received this for Christmas and we finally got it out and used it today. First car broke when trying to get it out the mold...because I didn't fully read the instructions! TOTALLY my fault. When I used the removal tool as I was supposed to, the car dislodged easily and in tact. It does take awhile...several minutes to melt the plastic, then another several minutes to cool the plastic, before removing the mold. But that is expected when you're melting plastic, right? :) No fumes came from the process which I was pleasantly surprised with. My son (5) and daughter (8) have been intrigued with this thing all afternoon. You'll definitely need refill packs if you want more than three cars (only three car bases come with the car maker) but with that said, the different molds can be interchanged on the three car bases. I would recommend this item and think we will get a lot of use out of it!

This is a really fun toy for children and allows to them be creative. The only disadvantage of the purchase is the money needed to continually use the Hot Wheel Car Maker. You will need to continually purchase the mold materials to keep making cars. I am giving this a 5 star because I feel it allows children to do something and be creative, rather just go out and grab a hot wheel off the store shelves. They will get the joy of making them by choosing the car style, the color and decorations. My child loves this! Amazon has good prices and options for extra material and molds to use with the Car Maker, so that really helps.I have no regrets buying this even though it's more than I would normally pay for a child's hot wheel and would recommend to anyone with children of age to play with hot wheels. This is something all children would love to play with, even girls. It's just that fun! My entire family played with it!
