The lantern mode radiates light in all directions, while the beam mode helps direct it in one direction. The light is LED white and very bright, but since it's small, it doesn't produce too much heat.

The reflector works well for bouncing the light out for use as a flashlight, and it also works fine for finding stuff in a bag or closet. The light works really well with rechargeable batteries.

    Good light, for the price

    Good light, for the price
Overall, I'd recommend keeping a couple of these on hand for a power outage. At their current price they're a good deal.We recently purchased several small, battery powered LED lanterns because our house experiences frequent power outages that last a couple of hours. All the units we picked were powered by AA batteries, and meant to be easy to move around from room to room.Pros: The Coleman MicroPacker was the cheapest - the others were twice as much or more. It has had good battery life, and the adjustable lighting reflector (providing either 360 degrees of illumination when down or more narrow focus when up) has turned out to be a useful feature, depending on where int he room you want to place it. So far both the ones we bought have been reliable, even though they've been dropped several times. They're reasonably sized - a little taller than a soda can, and skinner, and weigh about half as much.Cons: Of all the lamps we bought, these were the 'least bright' - but since the cost way less than the others, you could by 2 or 3 of them and end up ahead. The light color is also the harsh white associated with early LED's, which may not matter to some folks. There are other products on the market now that offer 'warmer' LEDs.

I rated this as a 5 because it (1) is exactly as described (2) extremly functional (3) comes with batteries (4) puts out a good amount of light (5) compact and easy to operate.

I bought this to add to our lights-out kit at home. My wife loved it at first glance (which she hardly ever does to anything). I have since ordered more because of the amount of light it produces.

I have placed this one behind a picture frame in our bedroom so it's easy to find and turn on when the winter storms hit - we will have light. The hook on top will make it very easy to hang just about anywhere we need light - and it's quite compact.

Very good quality - I already dropped tested it (onto a carpeted floor) and it didn't miss a beat.

Update: (1) This light REALLY performs well with high-capacity batteries as others have commented on in their reviews. The batteries that come with it are 'ok' - but if you want to get the most out of this light - install better batteries. (2) I price-checked this item at the local "W-Store" and the price on the shelf was DOUBLE this price - so Amazon truly has a good bargin here for a quality light.

      Updates (11/4/13):
Do look at the prices - the default is higher priced but the lower price with PRIME shipping is available.

This past weekend we had an unexpected power outage due to a squirrel and transformer trying to share the same space - squirrel lost - and we lost power. The two lamps provided just the 'right' amount of light to move around, play board game, etc. What I mean is that I didn't feel I was wasting battery power by having too bright a light - the light amount was 'just right' in that we coul see and our eyes weren't straining due to dim light or too much light (like when I use a propane powered lantern). Being able to raise the rear baffle and place the lamp in a corner lit up the entire room - just perfect - made a bad experience comfortable because of the light it provided.

I picked up two of these for those times when a storm knocks the power out. First, they are not that bright. It is significantly better than a night light, but if you're used to high lumen lanterns then you might be disappointed. With it hanging from the center of the ceiling it illuminated a 20x20 foot room adequately enough to prevent one from tripping over or bumping into things. I found it did not work as well on the fireplace mantle (at the far end of the room) or on the end table as its lower placement and the shadows it created really cut back on the usable light.

It really shines in smaller areas =) A 10x10 foot area is very well lit whether it is hanging above or on a night stand. It provides comfortable reading light if you are within 3 feet of the lantern. It also works fine for finding stuff in a bag or closet. I find the slide up reflector more useful to shield your eyes when digging around inside a closet as it does not seem to focus the beam or cause the reflected area to be a whole lot brighter.

It appears to constructed very well. Much better than many lanterns in this price range. I wouldn't want to chance a 3 foot drop on pavement, but I think a 3 foot drop on to your carpet would be okay. If I had to nit pick, I would say the handle seems weak and possibly the battery compartment cover. Pure speculation on my part though and looking hard for faults.

I didn't test the run time, but given its brightness I hope the strength lies there. Given my experience with LEDs, I believe that to be the case.

For the price I felt it was better to get a couple of these than one single bright lantern. I still think you might want a bright flash light to supplement these, but they will do in a pinch.

Also, in the description, it makes reference that this is collapsible. Mine are not and I do not think this product is. Maybe earlier versions are or another model is. The same paragraph says "15 hours on three AAA", no, this is a AA product. So a copy and paste from another product perhaps. I noticed that after I ordered it and wasn't expecting it to collapse. The reflector does collapse though.

Got 2 of these for my toddlers to carry for our upcoming camping trip this summer. Turns out we needed them sooner in our storm shelter. They were fantastic! They came with batteries already in the package, they were easy to turn on and off, and a great size for children to carry (lightweight and short). Both children (ages 2 and 4) were able to pull the panel up and down to turn it from a flashlight to a lantern. There isn't a dimming option so it is just on/off, but the lights were very bright and perfect for our need. They are white LED lights so keep that in mind as I hear some have sensitivity to white lights. They were also dropped a couple times on hard concrete and held up like champs - very sturdy. I am looking forward to using them for camping and will likely order a couple more to have on hand for my niece and nephew! So glad I chose these.
